War brewing in South America?

Columbia is accusing Hugo Chavez’s Venezuela of supporting its leftist narco-rebels. Both countries have sent troops to their borders. Now Ecuador, where those rebels hideout and whose territory was violated by Columbian planes attacking the rebels, is getting drawn in, cutting diplomatic relations with Columbia and sending troops to ITS border with that country. See this and monitor the powderkeg.

If it turns out that it’s true that Chavez has been funding FARC, we would have to assume that this is not a new war, but a new phase in the war that’s been going on for years. Given Chavez’s support of leftists around South America, I dare suggest that the Colombians are right that he’s been supporting the murderers of Colombians.

There’s also a reality that Chavez has accomplished something remarkable; he’s bankrupting his oil-producing nation in a market that’s paying over $100 per barrel for crude. Rattling the saber can help people ignore empty store shelves.

Remarkable? I thought it was socialist strongmen’s specialty to take a reasonably functioning nation and drive it into the ground, all the while rattling sabers to divert the population’s attention!
