Tired of reality shows? How about a surreality show? (A term apparently coined by TV critic Tom Shales, referring to another program, the term meaning a drama unhinged from any kind of plausibility or realism.) “Lost” returns tonight. Will you?
Gene Edward Veith is the Provost and Professor of Literature at Patrick Henry College, the Director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary, a columnist for World Magazine and TableTalk, and the author of 18 books on different facets of Christianity & Culture.
Lucas Cranach was the great artist of the Reformation. He was a close friend of Martin Luther. He was a businessman, who first printed Luther's translation of the Bible; a politician, who served on the Wittenberg town council and served the city as its mayor; a chemist, who operated a pharmacy; a teacher, who trained a host of apprentice artists; a family-man, who helped arrange Luther's marriage with the two men serving as the godfathers of each other's children; and an active layman in his church, who gave his pastors important personal and material support.
As a Christian who lived out his faith in his many different callings, Cranach thus embodies the Reformation doctrine of vocation, using the gifts God had given him in service to Christ and his neighbor in the church, the family, the workplace, and the culture.
In the spirit of Lucas Cranach, this blog will discuss wide-ranging issues of Christianity and culture with a Lutheran twist.

Yes! We have been planning our week around the return of Lost! We are die-hard fans since you gave it a good review with the episode about baptism.
Being a fan of LOST since the beginning, and having been involved in the latest LOST online ARG (Alternate Reality Game) involving Oceanic Air, I am primed and ready for season 4…even though it will only last eight episodes. And I have heard (through a “middle man”) from one of the editors of LOST that these first eight episodes are the buildup to the really good stuff. But the good news is that they shouldn’t have any problem “catching up” in the last two seasons (as long as the WGA strike ends in a timely manner).
I watched it at the beginning and then got totally Lost.
I will return, though I got hooked only recently through my brother’s renting season 3 DVDs.
Dr. Veith, could you provide a link to the said post about Lost and baptism?

Found on Lost
We Tivo the shows we want to watch so we can see them at our leisure. And our only leisure is Friday nights. We just watched “Lost.” The episode hinged on and culminated in baptism! Both the mother and her baby. It was spoken of in terms of Christ freeing people from their sins. What with the wise, loving, yet macho African who always quotes the Bible–a rare POSITIVE portrayal of a Christian on TV–and now adding the sacramental dimension so often missing even on “Christian” television, “Lost” may be the most Christian program on TV!
