This is why I think McCain can beat Obama. We've got an Obama wave going on right now, one that's based on him looking and feeling really, really good. That's the easiest thing to rip to shreds in an election. One or two more of these pastor rants or the wife saying she's never before been proud of the US, then Obama is just a regular guy. The feeling is gone.
McCain's candidacy is based on him being the best guy for the job with a record to prove it (whether you like the record or not, it's there, and he's standing on it). McCain doesn't need to "look good' to get where he is and to get to the White House. Actually, hes' gotten where he is while looking very, very bad. McCain isn't the warm and fuzzy type.

Actually, the self-inflicted wounds that lead to poverty are the same for whites and blacks. Walter Williams from time to time lists them:

1. Not graduating from high school.

2. Having sex and children outside of wedlock.

3. Not getting a job. (two forty hour, minimum wage jobs lift a family of four out of poverty)

4. Getting into drugs and criminal activity.

If you graduate from high school, hold sex for marriage, get a job, and don't get into drugs or criminal activity, you're likely to be part of that middle class that "Rev." Wright despises, but is nonetheless part of.

Manxman (@11), have you seen more than the video clip making the rounds to form a basis for your opinions on what he is saying about black culture? Are you sure he hasn't talked about it?

And why does one random black person have to speak for the sins of the black culture, if indeed such a singular, uniform entity exists? (For instance, I know enough white people to know that there is no one white culture.)

And if there are "sins within the Black culture that lead to bondage for Blacks", then what are the sins within "White America" that lead to the very many poor, white people in America? By your own rules, you need to address these and see if these white people's problems are "self-inflicted" before you start talking about black people.

Hyperbole & excess emotion is not uncommon in sermons in Black churches.

I, however, am more concerned about his blindness toward sins within the Black culture that lead to bondage for Blacks than I am for his attacks on problems with the White establishment. If he wants to go after the sins of White America, he needs to be honest and take a good hard look to see if Black problems are self-inflicted.

A former pastor, from my liberal Lutheran days, years ago explained liberation theology to me in the most generous terms as being something unfortunately necessary to bring some people from some quarters into the fold of the faith.
I swallowed that hook, line, sinker, with liberal white guilt as the bait.
I don't doubt that there's enough liberal white guilt in enough of mainstream America (we successfully mainstream many hurtful things, after all) to get Obama thru this little hurdle, indeed to help propel him thru it.
Peter Wehner has a great little essay on the Contentions blog of Commentary Magazine about how this is a great opportunity for some accounting by the Religious Left for a change, after all the rightfully placed criticisms of the Religious Right. If only...

Kimett @#4.

Thank you for reminding us about Liberation Theology.

Rev. Wright, in a interview on Fox News (sometime back and before the recent film clips) supported "liberation theology" and "black liberation theology", referring to Nicaragua, and to Jim Cone and Dwight Hopkins as suggested reading.

The transcript of the interview may be found on the Fox News web site.

We had all better do a little homework on this matter of Liberation Theology.

What's all this about agreeing or disagreeing with a pastor's sermons?
This does not compute to a confessional congregation.
You mean the pastor is maybe preaching opinions and politics instead of Christ crucified? Churches still do that?
Isn't that so 20th Century?
We need change!

If you have to repudiate anything your pastor says, I think you need to be praying about whether you are supposed to be in his congregation. This is not to say that you must agree 100% with everything he says, but the intemperate, hateful, unpatriotic nature of Pastor Wright's sermons requires a response far beyond mere disagreement. Yet Obama has been in the congregation for 20 years, and contributed some $22,000 to the ministry last year. Hmmmm

Thank you for posting this. I was previously an Obama supporter, but now after this, I am having a hard time with him.

You know, back in 2004, we had a candidate who had viciously and repeatedly slandered our Vietnam veterans, more or less parroting the psychiatrist scene from "Alice's Restaurant." If that didn't kill that candidate's campaign (and it didn't), neither will this kill Obama's.
