Pop-spirituality guru Deeprak Chopra writes an essay entitled Why We Need a New Jesus.
He says there have been two Jesuses. One the rabbi of history, and the other the divine savior created by organized religion. He says we need a new one, a Jesus of “higher consciousness.”
A prophet of higher consciousness sounds pretty much like Deeprak Chopra. The way I read this essay is that he is volunteering for the job.
But you can bet that the new Jesus he wants or wants to be will not have a Cross.

I am afraid he is a day late and a dollar short. Joel Osteen is already preaching this “new” Jesus.
I like the old one better.
Actually, I think that he has some things right in this essay. This is where true depception lies. True deception contains enough truth to be believable. What he says isn’t an all-out lie. Christians have done terrible things in the name of Jesus. Churches throughout the world are by in large impotent. What he has wrong is thinking that we need a New Jesus.
He calls for a “higher conciousness” or “god-conciousness.” We have the Holy Spirit given to us to empower us to follow Him. We cannot follow Him on our own, Chopra is right about that.
What we need is an awakening of the people of God to the True Jesus and an indwelling of the Holy Spirit that inpowers us to live holy lives.
Don’t you love it when non-Christians inform us about Jesus?
Is scholarship–let alone theology–nothing to this man?
As Mel Brooks said: You buy the premise, you buy the bit.
I have wondered lately why Mormons do not start using crosses (empty ones of course) to adorn their buildings since the seem so intent on presenting themselves as presbyterian-like.
The cross IS a stumbling block. Thank God for that!
Would it be too mean in our day of “not judging!” and of
being “inclusive” and “tolerant” to just say to this guru
what Jesus said to Peter in Matthew 16:23?!
I agree that often modern “scholarship” can devalue the message and destroy the purpose of the orthodox Christ.
Also,
I am a fellow blogger covering one individual’s efforts to alleviate world injustice. Adam Nieman, cofounder of sweatshop free clothing company called NoSweat apparel, hopes to see people “vote with the dollar” for peace in areas lacking it. The garment industry is an apt and primary example.
The company NoSweat Apparel fights against sweatshop labor and against poverty in the West Bank through means as simple as a t-shirt produced in factories operating in equality and justice. Their efforts hopefully spark what will become a widespread fire.
