Todd Wilken and Jeff Schwarz of the marytred “Issues, Etc.” radio show, have put together a new independent radio program that will debut soon! Click this to hear some details: A New Issues Etc. is Arising!
Gene Edward Veith is the Provost and Professor of Literature at Patrick Henry College, the Director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary, a columnist for World Magazine and TableTalk, and the author of 18 books on different facets of Christianity & Culture.
Lucas Cranach was the great artist of the Reformation. He was a close friend of Martin Luther. He was a businessman, who first printed Luther's translation of the Bible; a politician, who served on the Wittenberg town council and served the city as its mayor; a chemist, who operated a pharmacy; a teacher, who trained a host of apprentice artists; a family-man, who helped arrange Luther's marriage with the two men serving as the godfathers of each other's children; and an active layman in his church, who gave his pastors important personal and material support.
As a Christian who lived out his faith in his many different callings, Cranach thus embodies the Reformation doctrine of vocation, using the gifts God had given him in service to Christ and his neighbor in the church, the family, the workplace, and the culture.
In the spirit of Lucas Cranach, this blog will discuss wide-ranging issues of Christianity and culture with a Lutheran twist.

Now, let’s help to financially support the broadcast.
We don’t want to lose them again.
They’re a treasure the LCMS would do well to retain. If LCMS isn’t going to do it, we listeners need to.
And we need to encourage others to listen. Lots of answers come from the mouth of Todd Wilken and his great guests, among whom have been our host here. One becomes a better apologist for having listened. It’s catechism by broadcast, and much more.

Since I’m not a fan of big government, I’m not a fan of big-church government either. Perhaps the LCMS can privatize a few other “issues” in our bloated structure.
This is a great thing for Todd, Jeff and their faithful listeners! Now Issue’s, Etc. is privately funded and operated. If they truly are what thousands wanted, this program will soar like an eagle. No longer is their an anchor to hold them back.
Please correct my grammar in comment number two. In the last line, “their” should read “there.” I apologize for the error.

Issues, Etc. isn’t the first confessional item to operate free from the stifling, counter-working bureaucracy. This has been happening for awhile.
It’s the first I know of, though, directed at laity.

Greg, isn’t the awesome catechetical magazine “Good News” directed at laity? I don’t think they get any support from the synod either. I love those magazines.
And boy, now I want to be a pirate, too! I think I’ll give them some of my loot, so that more people can find the treasure!
I’m sorry to say that I never heard of Issues, Etc. until it was cancelled. I will check it out now for sure.
This is so good. I am so thankful to faithful people and pastors who step out in faith to bring to truth to the faithful.
Another non-synodical organization directed at the catechesis of young laity is HIGHER THINGS, organized by a bunch of confessional Lutheran pastors and lay folk. They have the best youth magazine I’ve ever encountered.
There is also the independent Lutheran radio show, Radical Grace.

In their “resurrected” Issues, Etc., will Todd and Jeff be under any restrictions, other than imposed by themselves, on what topics they discuss on the program?
What has happened to the Issues Etc radio show is the full confirmation that in fact the LC-MS does not have bishops. Rather, it has “presidents” and so rightly calls them that.
The LC-MS behaves typically like a business. It is only fitting that they would have presidents (as in president of a corporation) and that they would behave like presidents.

I can’t imagine that Wilken and Schwarz would abandon the restraints of taste and Christian love, regardless of any lack of restrictions on content.
And I don’t imagine they’ll abandon the freedom of truth.
Todd Wilken is scary good at letting truth alone offend; it seems he’s always left any personal attitude/agenda at the studio door.
That’s a big part of what’s made Issues, Etc. so singularly awesome, and a major reason it’s so needed, and will be so welcomed back, whatever it’s called.
If it’s still a Christ-centered and cross-focused program, and nothing but that truth, what restrictions can there be, and who would be doing the restricting?
I hope we who were so offended by the show’s cancellation and the mistreatment of Wilken and Schwarz aren’t hoping to have a new program made in OUR image, where synod gets regularly roasted and in-house issues are constantly flogged.
If that were to be the new show’s mission, I wouldn’t give it the time of day, let alone a dime. When the Word’s being spoken, the gospel proclaimed, the truth being told, then light is shed on everything, and there are therefore no restrictions.

Is there a site or blog that lists all the “confessional” new media outlets? Maybe the Wittenberg Trail would be a good place (if they don’t already have it)
Great comment #15, Susan! This is exactly my hope for the show and was and will be the key to its success.
Nothing content-wise needs to change for the show to be as good–and as truthful–as ever. And it was the best.
The only change necessary is that more people pony up.
