Dante on Sin & Love

Thanks to Ball Point Blog for alerting me to the fact that my Table Talk columns are available online. I did not know that. I like writing for that magazine, since each issue has a special theme, and I, in effect, get assigned a topic. That forces me to think about things I otherwise would not. The topic for this month was “The Seven Deadly Sins.” Here is what I did with it.

Now I’m going to have to read Dante for myself!

The progression of advancement you lay out in the article is intriguing and contain worthy goals. The possible down side can be the progression becoming a “boot strap” theology whereby one ascends the ladder to God by his own shear force of will and action.

That’s another thing I like about the Lutheran faith: we do not subscribe to the concept of, “7 deadly sins.” Rather, we believe, teach and confess what the Scriptures teach: sin and grace, Law and Gospel, justification, et al!!

What is “et al”? The last I checked, Lutherans vehemently denied the doctrine of et al, so forth, and so on, etc.

“et al” = the doctrines in the Scriptures.

Excellent article! Although it’s been quite some time, I agree with your endorsement of Purgatorio. It is an amazing piece of literature–and theology.
