Roman Catholic bishops in Italy are telling actors they had better not do sex scenes. They are catching flak for interfering in the artistic process, but I salute them.
Gene Edward Veith is the Provost and Professor of Literature at Patrick Henry College, the Director of the Cranach Institute at Concordia Theological Seminary, a columnist for World Magazine and TableTalk, and the author of 18 books on different facets of Christianity & Culture.
Lucas Cranach was the great artist of the Reformation. He was a close friend of Martin Luther. He was a businessman, who first printed Luther's translation of the Bible; a politician, who served on the Wittenberg town council and served the city as its mayor; a chemist, who operated a pharmacy; a teacher, who trained a host of apprentice artists; a family-man, who helped arrange Luther's marriage with the two men serving as the godfathers of each other's children; and an active layman in his church, who gave his pastors important personal and material support. As a Christian who lived out his faith in his many different callings, Cranach thus embodies the Reformation doctrine of vocation, using the gifts God had given him in service to Christ and his neighbor in the church, the family, the workplace, and the culture. In the spirit of Lucas Cranach, this blog will discuss wide-ranging issues of Christianity and culture with a Lutheran twist.

while they are at it,
fig leaves over all vatican classical art. maybe burkas for the statues!
Catholic store owners stop printing longere(sp?) ads…JC Penney should maybe be boycotted until the situation improves…
Women in bikinis holding makita power tools or cans of beer on posters also need to go for real. in fact. bikinis….
should bikinis be allowed?
We are all already numb to things that should not be done. Women being objectified to sell stuff. Forget art. $ex $ells (no I don´t think sex in films is cool…).
Where exactly should the line be drawn…
Maybe we should let sharia courts handle all this stuff after all. Christian bishops at least then would have extra time on their hands to preach Christ.
So here we have one more public pronouncement that proclaims to the world what the REAL and urgent business a christian bishop is. How many italians go to mass regularly? How much time do Italian bishops spend wringing hands over spreading the news of Christ crucified more urgently? I would THRILL to see those news reports. Regularly would be my preference.
If someone in the church has 15 minutes to catch the public´s attention what content would YOU fill that message with?
It´s the devils trap. make the church into moral enforcer. who could argue with that as being wrong? it is not… but yet something precious is lost…
Having lived in Italy for two years, I’ll tell you the bishops are going to be fighting an uphill battle on this one. Women in bikini’s selling power tools? Try topless fw. Yes a trip to the hardware store was always a pleasant experience for the twenty year old Airman.
